Jillian Gellman

Mississippi National River and Recreation Area

Born and raised in New Jersey, Jillian (she/they) grew up exploring the forest behind her house and
enjoyed paddling and swimming in the lakes nearby. They have always been passionate about taking
action to make a positive impact on the natural surroundings. Jillian continues to educate themself
and others on the importance of being stewards of the environment. They studied geography and
environmental sustainability at the University of Mary Washington, where they sang in an a cappella
group. She spent her junior year abroad in Thailand and Australia and developed a more well-rounded
understanding of sustainability and natural resource management practices. Despite a desire to travel,
Jillian found herself in Minnesota every summer in-between academic years. She worked for the
Conservation Corps of Minnesota and Iowa’s Summer Youth Corps for four summers of trail work,
habitat restoration, youth development, and community building. They now happily call the “Land of
10,000 Lakes” home. Jillian is thrilled to be serving as the CVA with the Mississippi National River and
Recreation Area and hopes to paddle the entire 72-mile stretch of the river before the end of their
service.
