Manzanar National Historic Site

Independence, CA

Manzanar is located on US 395 in the southern Owens Valley of eastern California. In 1942, the Manzanar War Relocation Center was one of ten camps where Japanese American citizens and resident Japanese aliens were incarcerated during World War II. The Civil Rights story of Manzanar is relevant to all Americans, perhaps now more than ever.

The CVA will help preserve Manzanar and share its stories by facilitating connections across the diverse geographic, socio-economic, and age spectrum. Bringing individuals and groups representing these "separate" histories together will ensure that the

NPS preserves and interprets Manzanar's past in its larger context and remains relevant to all visitors.

Located in California's Eastern Sierra, the area offers world-class recreation in all directions and in all seasons. There are also endless options to bike, boat, rock climb, fish, camp, and more. It's an adventurer's paradise.
